Keep Southern California Backyards Well Watered in AugustAugust is the latest month of the entire year in southern California so it is important to keep vegetables, flowers and trees and shrubs well watered especially as they continue steadily to flower and produce.Be Normal water Smart: Make use of a drip irrigation system to normal water plants and trees and shrubs. There is no point in watering leaves. Drinking water longer, more deeply and less often instead of applying a quick daily spray.Plant Cool Season Vegetables in Pots: Hold out before end of the month and then seed cool season vegetable seeds in pots. These include broccoli, Brussel sprouts cabbage, celery, kale, chard, onions and shallots. You can plant them in the ground, but the ground must be placed moist and receive some shade during the day. Radishes, carrots and beet seed products can go straight into the garden.Seed Cool Season Blossoms: Plant fall season annuals including calendula, cineraria, dianthus, delphiniums, Iceland poppies, pansies, snapdragon and stock later in August. They'll give your garden color for another several months.Mow Weekly: Lawns expand quickly during summer. Make sure lawn blades stay at least an inch long after mowing. Longer blades protect the land from high temperature and water evaporation.Time For Indoor Vegetable Maintenance: Wash particles from indoor plant leaves with warm water. Remove inactive leaves. Repot vegetation with planting medium. If the plants are too big to repot, add potting mix to existing ground.
Remove Aphids on Rose Bushes Naturally: Ways to remove aphids depend on the amount of infestation. First, try using a strong stream of drinking water from a garden hose to knock off of the insects. If indeed they gain, bath each leave with light soap and water. Aphids prefer to cover in cool, dark places. Remove focused limbs from the guts of the bush to encourage air circulation. Also, remove deceased flowers. They are simply another covering place for aphids.Soak Your Compost Pile: If you maintain your own compost pile, give it a good soaking several times during August. Summer time heat tends to dry compost piles. Watering will encourage the organic materials to decompose. Cover the pile after every soaking to keep carefully the pile moist longer.Slug and Snail Coverage: Strawberries are a delicacy for slugs, snails and supplement bugs (rolly pollies). These pests hang on before berries are almost ripe before digging in. While they are still growing, keep carefully the strawberries off the bottom. Place them on real wood planks, on slippery cans--anything that means it is problematic for the pests to reach them.Give Your Yard a Tropical Look: Banana trees can prosper in Southern California. They can reach up to 25 feet and can start producing berry a year or even more after planting. The land surrounding the trunk should be well drained but kept moist. Banana trees should be planted in the warmest area of your yard--with the most sun and safeguarded from wind. Trees and shrubs may survive in sub-freezing temps for a short while. To be safe, wrap the trunk with a blanket if very cold temperatures are expected.
